Get to Know Me :]
My name is Sonya Karels and I am an actress/musician/dancer just starting out my professional career. All of my life I have wanted to perform – it is all that I have ever been able to see my self doing. I have been dancing since I was three years old, and I have an enormous passion for it. I also love to choreograph. I have choreographed many of my own and fellow dance team member’s solos, dance team routines, and musicals throughout the years. Along with choreographing, I have also been involved in many other aspects of the theatre: costumes, hair and make up, set design and construction, and of course performing in numerous musicals and plays at my high school, and local community theatres.
During my high school years I always saw the theatre as a safe haven – a home – for me, and that is why I continued perusing it. I always thought it was the atmosphere of the theatre, and being on stage, but I have found that is not the case. It is the work itself that feels like home to me. Everything about performing – singing, dancing, and acting – feels unbelievably natural to me. It just makes sense, and when I am performing is when I truly feel like myself.
Of course there are many other things that I love: drawing, cheerleading, fashion, writing, swimming, playing guitar, and spending time with my amazing friends.
I am a very friendly person who always tries to be nice to everyone, no matter what they have done (I am guessing I got that from growing up in Minnesota. You know how everybody always says “Minnesota Nice”, well that is me). I come from a tiny little town in southwest Minnesota called Minneota (yes, it is “Minnesota” without the “s”). Since I grew up in a small town, I was able to be involved in many different things in high school, such as: dance team, cheerleading, student council, mock trial, speech, swim team, theatre, art, concert and pep band, concert and girls choir, and prom, homecoming, and snowball committees. I loved being involved in loads of activities, and I believe it helped shape me into the person I am today.
Also, having a fabulous support system – my mom – has helped with the pursuit of my dreams. She has always been there for me, and completely supportive of everything that I set out to do. I don’t think that I would be as confident as I am without the support my mom has always given me.
I have studied at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in Los Angeles, and have learned a lot in the short time I have been there. I am dedicated to make my love of performing into a career, and I am confident that I have the talent and knowledge to get me there.
